Hair loss or baldness, it often is an unwelcome condition of the hair. Hair loss is often a precursor of baldness and it can happen to both men and women. The causes for hair loss are diverse, yet in a number of cases, a hair transplant can be the solution in order to regain a head full of hair.
Normal hair loss or the start of something worse?
With approximately 100,000 to 150,000 hairs on your head, an average hair loss of approximately 100 hairs a day is entirely normal. The healthy hair roots ensure that hair grows back in sufficient numbers. And if a period of increased hair loss follows on from a few weeks during which hair loss was less, there is still no reason for concern. Yet if the hair loss is more than around 100 hairs a day and this continues for more than a few weeks, it could be the start of permanent hair loss. Characteristic for this is reduced hair volume, hair that grows less quickly, that is starting to change, e.g. drier or a comb that is much fuller after having combed your hair.
Alopecia Androgenetica
In most cases, hair loss is caused by a hereditary disorder called Alopecia Androgenetica. People who suffer from this condition are more sensitive to the dihydrotestosterone (DHT) hormone, which reduces the growth period of the hairs as a result of the hair root follicles becoming smaller and ultimately dying. The hair loss is not restored by new hairs growing back, resulting in thinner hair and ultimately bald patches on the scalp.
Hair loss in both men and women
Both men and women can be affected by hair loss, with approximately 70% of all men and 40% of women suffering from it one time or another. In men, the hair loss is often concentrated in certain areas, such as along the hairline, causing the familiar widow’s peak or receding hairline. If caused by the DHT hormone, the hair on top of the head is often affected first. In women, on the other hand, the hair loss is often spread across the entire head. They are, therefore, more affected by thin hair on top of the head, rather than becoming bald altogether. A third of all man aged 25 to 40 are affected by hair loss. If women are affected, it is often during the menopause.
